This includes the initial purchase and ongoing maintenance of your uniform, including mess dress.

Training Costs:

You may be able to claim tax relief on the costs of essential training courses specific to your role in the Navy.

FAQ

You could be eligible for tax refunds on a range of work-related expenses. If you’ve been assigned to a temporary posting (under 24 months), you can claim back tax on travel costs. That includes using your own car or taking public transport – we’ve got you covered. Plus, you could potentially reclaim tax on meals while on duty, and even uniform expenses like laundry. We’ll help you navigate the process simply and quickly as possible.

A ‘temporary posting’ is typically defined as an assignment to a duty location expected to last less than 24 months. Travel expenses to such postings are likely claimable. Even if you’re posted to different locations overseas, if your assignments are under 24 months, you may be eligible to claim travel expenses between your home and temporary places of duty.

To support a tax refund claim, you will need to provide supporting documents, which could include:

  • A list of bases and courses attended. Copies of assignment orders are very helpful.
  • Monthly payslips.
  • Mileage logs with dates and destinations of your journeys or detailed notes of postcodes/addresses.
  • Receipts for other expenses, such as meals or Mess Dress.
  • Proof of ID (passport or driving licence) and address (utility bill).

If you don’t have all this documentation, your Military Tax Rebates advisor will help you obtain these documents before submitting your claim.

You can claim tax refunds for the past four tax years. It’s beneficial to claim as soon as possible as unclaimed refunds expire.

No, if you have worked in the British armed forces at any time in the last 4 years, you could still be eligible to claim.

Yes, we can help you process a renewal for the years you have not claimed for. If you would like to recommend us to other military personnel even if they have claimed before, we also offer a referral bonus.

If you have completed Phase 1 training you could be eligible to claim a tax refund. Reservists may not always qualify for tax refunds on travel as you tend to work in one place more regularly, but every case is different and training plays a vital part of your role, so you should explore all options.

Receiving HDT or GYH allowances doesn’t prevent you from claiming tax back. These allowances are tax-free, but they may not fully cover the expenses HMRC recognises as claimable. You can claim a refund for the difference between what you receive and what HMRC deems allowable.

The processing time can range from 8-12 weeks. The time it takes to receive a tax refund can be influenced by a few factors:

  • How quickly you can provide all the required information.
  • How busy HMRC is, which can depend on the time of year.

When making a claim through Military Tax Rebates, we’ll give you a dedicated account manager who will help guide you through each step of the process, including on how to gather the information you need and will keep you up to date throughout your claim.

This means less time searching for important information, less time bouncing around switchboards and customer service teams and quicker payouts.
